Lemonade: From Portuguese Workshop to Global Sustainable Pioneer

Lemonade: From Portuguese Workshop to Global Sustainable Pioneer

From past to now, in the fashion industry, where the question of “sustainability” has been constantly asked, we see so many “Greenwashing” brands or products. However, when I first met Lemonade, a Portuguese hat brand from my friend’s Instagram reel in 2021 summer, it was impressive at that time. A rare atmosphere was emerging that didn’t align with a sustainable slogan on the market at that time. Rather, it’s a brand instinct rooted in the Mediterranean soil – one that seamlessly combines “meticulous craftsmanship” and “contemporary aesthetics” together.

Lemonade - A Portuguese Hat Brand

As a copywriter for custom eco headwear, I decided to write an article about this great sustainable hat brand, about its history and development. I found that Lemonade’s history is almost a chronicle of how a niche European eco-friendly brand was born out of cultural inspiration, finding balance between handmade and business expansion, and finally becoming a micro historical view of becoming a sustainable fashion brand.

The Birth of Lemonade

From Beyoncé‘s music to the philosophy of a piece of hat.

Few people know the origin of the brand name “Lemonade”, and it doesn’t mean a cup of a summer cold drink. “Lemonade” is from Beyoncé’s astonishing music album of the same name, “Lemonade”. In 2016, this album discussed women’s betrayal, racial identity, and self-redemption via a poetic metaphor’s language. The founder, Silvia, was deeply touched by the spirits of women’s equality and freedom that the album delivered, and Silvia realized that accessories were not only for decorating and styling, but also could become a personal statement in silent languages.

In 2017, Lemonade was created in a small town in Northern Portugal, famous for conventional textiles. It’s not an accidental choice for Silvia – Portugal has the longest history of handmade hat-making in Europe. From the 19th century, people made a living by weaving textiles, as a family workshop, generation by generation, in the surroundings of Porto. Lemonade was the outset that cooperated with these family workshops that had mastered hundreds of years in textile weaving and crochet hooks to reconnect these dying crafts with modern designs.

Lemonade’s first product was a minimalist soft fedora hat without complex ornaments. Made from 100% Merino wool could offer a tender texture and a proper curved brim, which quickly garnered attention among local Lisbon boutiques. The most important thing is that from the first hat, Lemonade established its core principle enduring to this day – using high-quality and low-impact material to make classic hats that can accompany people for years ad years.

More Than a Label of Environmental Protection

Sustainable development permeates the whole system, including each detail.

When studied deeply about Lemonade product lines, I especially noted the practical system of its “sustainability”. For many brands, “sustainability” might mean using organic cotton or regenerated polyester; however, Lemonade permeated the theory of sustainability into each step, from raw materials to the final packaging.

For fabric choices, Lemonade shows its astonishing control and accuracy. It’s symbol soft fedoras, made from 100% Merino wool that is natural and degradable, and excellent in adjusting temperature, which can break through the limit of seasons. Its straw hats are primarily made from Mexican straws or local Palm leaves in Portugal. These plant fibers are short in growth cycle, with low consumption during the processes, and the final products can be totally returned to nature.

Handmade is another mainstay of Lemonade’s sustainable philosophy. In Portuguese northern workshops, craftsmen still keep using wooden molds and hand-sewn needles that have lasted for centuries. Although this type of hat-making is limited in production, it can avoid consuming lots of energy and leftover waste during industrial production. Each hat, from weaving, shaping, to sewing ornaments, needs at least 6 independent handmade processes to ensure its durability is much better than hats from mass production.

The most touching part is the packaging detail – using well-structured cardboard boxes to ship can keep the hat in great shape during shipping, totally abandoning extra disposable plastic or bubble wraps. Moreover, using regenerated tapes to seal cardboard boxes, and their brand tags are also made from the same cardboard paper. Behind these seemingly minor acts of persistence lies an unwavering commitment to the principle that environmental protection must be absolute.

The Evolution of Products

Finding the balance between classic and fun.

Looking back at Lemonade’s product iterations over the past seven years, we can clearly see a clear line that emphasizes classic silhouettes and subtle changes to meet modern consumers’ personal demands.

The Lemonade’s classic collections are the soft Fedora, which keeps the stiff crown and streamlined brim of European gentleman hats from the 20th century, and has made a big breakthrough in ornamentation. Since 2022, Lemonade has started to cooperate with independent embroidery workshops, decorating the brim with embroidered ribbons, which is inspired by traditional Portuguese Alentejo embroidery. Lemonade has also brought in lace weave ribbons, thin leather straps, satin ribbons, and even detachable leather bands. The design thinking of one hat with many styles accurately responds to modern consumers’ eagerness for flexible styling and self-expression.

Lemonade mainly launched its summer collection – Citron Palm to push vocation aesthetics to the next level in summer 2022. The Citron Palm collection is made from Mexican straws with detachable colorful ribbons or shell charms. Flowy ribbons can be tied under chins or naturally drop down to the chest, which can infuse your pastoral style with a touch of Bohemian carefree spirit. Then, shell charms can evoke Portugal’s expansive coastline and maritime heritage – regional elements transformed into a type of universal fashion.

It’s worth mentioning that Lemonade hasn’t been limited to the range of traditional women’s hats. Its bucket hat and baseball cap collections cover from XS to XL in head sizes to show the inclusivity of its inclusivity toward diverse body types and gender identities. As Lemonade philosophy’s metaphor: Freedom starts when wearers define their starts.

From Portugal to Worldwide

The globalization path of Lemonade from an independent brand.

Lemonade’s marketing strategies are also worth studying. Lemonade mainly faces global consumers via its official website: lemonade-collective.com. This mode – DTC (Direct-to-consumer) can control its price, tell the whole brand story, and build a long-term relationship with consumers.

At price positioning, Lemonade has ingeniously shown its segment strategies – basic straw hats and bucket hats from €36 to €99 to attract first-try young consumers via its great cost-effectiveness; sophisticated Fedora from €165 to €255, establishing its reputation of premium quality via premium fabrics and valuable handcrafts. Such a structure cannot only ensure revenue health while avoiding the risk of alienating the core customer base due to excessive pricing.

Based on the marketing data, Lemonade’s success is not only due to its products, but also to its accurate assessment of consumers’ eagerness to buy meaningful things after the pandemic. People start to think about the environmental burden that is caused by fast fashion. A piece of a hat from Portugal, made by hat masters, wrapped in non-plastic, degradable fabrics, is beyond its physical properties as an accessory and has become a carrier of value.

Future and Challenges

Lemonade Hats - 06

The resilient path for small sustainable brands.

Of course, when studying a brand deeply, we also need to examine the challenges it faces. For a brand like Lemonade – a handmade eco hat brand, scaling up remains a perennial challenge. The handmade way decides its maximum production, and its insistence on natural materials means that it’s very hard to reduce its cost. Therefore, how to remain its initial heart of hat making and properly expand its influence? This is the key issue for the next level up.

Besides that, since the theory of environmental protection has become mainstream, more and more groups and brands have started to launch sustainable lines, which brings competitive pressure to independent brands. However, the pros of Lemonade are its integrity and sincerity, and its sustainability is not marketing scripts, but the cultural gene of its founder, the practical system of each detail. Such sincerity from inside and outside is something that capitals cannot copy in a short time.

In the future, I wish and hope to see more explorations across multiple dimensions from Lemonade. For example, cooperating with Portuguese artists to launch a collaboration series,  integrating dying European traditional textile crafts into its design, or building a more transparent supply chain traceability system, which can let consumers know the behind-the-scenes story of each hat. All these measures can deepen the brand image and offer a great, precious experience for the whole of sustainable fashion.

Wearing A Lemonade Hat

Your Choice is not only a hat.

As a copywriter for sustainable custom headwear for a long time, I have seen so many brands drifting with the tide of the sustainable wave. However, Lemonade lets me see a rare brand consciousness, where it comes from (Portuguese traditional handicrafts and the inspiration from Beyoncé’s feminism), and where to go (becoming the global lifestyle brand combining environment and aesthetics).

In the sunlight of Lisbon, in the artisan workshops of Porto, within the curve of a fedora woven from Merino wool, Lemonade tells a patient, sincere, and beautiful story. For consumers who choose this brand, wearing a Lemonade hat means choosing a single piece that can accompany us for many years, which can support a group who insist on traditional handicrafts and join in a more responsible fashion in the future.

Maybe this is the most precious luxury good in modern times.
